why banana become a staple food in the world

According to a recent study conducted by representatives of the advisory group to the international organization dedicated to scientific research in the field of agriculture (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research), bananas can be shortly primary staple food for many millions of people, displacing some of the potatoes and other crops. The reason - climate change.

Researchers believe that bananas replace potatoes mainly in some developing countries. However, except for bananas, with an increase in temperature on the planet, more and more important for people begin to include other plants. In particular, we are talking about cassava and other little-known tropical plants of the family Euphorbiaceae. Scientists believe that people will have to get used to the new way, different from the usual diet menu, while traditional cultures have to fight for survival.

In the study, a group of scientists conducted a serious scientific work, they say, in the field, studying all the more pronounced the effect of climate change on the example of 22-the most important people for agricultural products. Researchers concluded that the level of productivity of the three most important (in terms of calorie content) crops - maize, rice and wheat - will decline in many developed countries.

It is assumed that the potato, which grows in abundance in countries with colder climates, may also suffer from the fact that the weather on the planet becomes extremely unstable, and the average temperatures are rising. The researchers believe that such climate change will trigger a surge of cultivation of certain varieties of bananas in some mountainous regions, and, even where hitherto cultivated potatoes.

One of the researchers, Dr. Philip Thornton (Philip Thornton), believes that the bananas in certain regions now could be a good substitute for potatoes (and this despite the fact that in respect of bananas as there are certain constraints that prevent the spread of the culture) . "It is not necessary that this is the simplest solution to the problem. However, there are areas in the world where increasing temperature bananas could be the solution for many owners," - said Dr. Thornton.

The report also says scientists about the prospects of wheat, which they themselves experts have called the most important in the world source of protein and calories of plants. Researchers believe that wheat is also expecting a very difficult future in developing countries, where due to the rising price of cotton grown there, corn and soybeans, farmers displace wheat on marginal soils. Thus, the wheat will be more susceptible to stress caused by climate change.
